Scottish Labour Party Conference: Motion passed renewing calls to decriminalise abortion
At the Scottish Labour Party conference on Friday 17 February 2023 a motion passed in support of Abortion Rights Scotland’s campaign to decriminalise abortion in Scotland. Read the motion here.
In Scotland abortion still comes under the category of criminal offence; While the 1967 Abortion Act makes abortion legal subject to certain conditions.; including requiring abortion seekers to get the approval of two doctors.
Abortion is healthcare. Abortion care is highly regulated and should solely be subject to appropriate professional standards in line with any other healthcare procedures, not criminal sanctions.
All women must be able to access abortion services easily and without fear of penalty or harassment. we strongly believe that Decriminalising abortion will help to remove stigma, remove fear and makes it clear to women that they have the right to control their own sexual and reproductive health choices.
