Ensuring Access: Women need as much time as necessary!
Misconceptions surrounding later abortions should not hinder women’s/pregnant peoples access to necessary care.
Later abortions are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all abortions and are crucial for those facing unique and often unforeseeable circumstances.
The latest abortion statistics reveal that the majority of procedures occur during the early stages of pregnancy, with 67% performed within the first seven weeks and 98% within the first 17 weeks. Medically induced procedures make up the majority, with 97% performed before 10 weeks.
Despite this, a group of MPs has proposed an amendment to lower the abortion time limit from 24 to 22 weeks. However, sensationalist campaigns by anti-abortion groups have failed to acknowledge the voices of women, medical evidence, and the support of the majority of the population.
It’s crucial to recognise that very few women require later abortions, and those who do face complex and individual circumstances. They must be empowered to make their own informed decisions. Abortion Rights urges MPs to continue supporting women’s reproductive rights.

Limiting abortion access harms women, although abortions after 22 weeks are extremely rare. In such cases, women are often vulnerable, including young teens in denial about their pregnancies due to extreme distress, rape survivors, victims of domestic abuse, and those with mental health issues.
Forcing these women to carry pregnancies to term would be cruel and perpetuate their trauma. For the most vulnerable, like victims of domestic abuse or rape, accessing abortion after 20 weeks could be lifesaving. However, government data shows that abortions after 24 weeks make up only 0.1% of total cases, with 276 such abortions in 2021.
Restricting abortion cutoffs would be devastating for the few women facing the incredibly difficult decision of needing an abortion late in pregnancy. They’d be forced to choose between continuing a dangerous or unwanted pregnancy and risking criminal prosecution.
For instance, when couples receive distressing news about a scan anomaly at 18-20 weeks, they rightly seek diagnostic tests, which can take weeks. Reducing the abortion limit before these tests are ready would pressure them into making hasty decisions, rather than waiting for potentially reassuring results.
