Model Motion: Defend Abortion Rights

This meeting notes with horror the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade ruling, which gave women a constitutional right to abortion. The ruling allows each state to make its own decision on access to abortion, several have already invoked ‘trigger’ laws banning abortion immediately.

The ruling will have devastating consequences both across the US, and globally as anti-abortion campaigners will gain confidence to oppose abortion rights elsewhere.

This meeting believes this is a totally unacceptable attack on a woman’s and pregnant people’s right to bodily autonomy. These attacks will hit all women, but it will hit the poor, working class, African American and migrant women hardest. The loss of Roe turns the clocks back half a century. Women who cannot access trusted advice online, or travel to states that provide abortions, will be forced  to go back to the backstreets increasing the risk of harm and death.

Poor and African American women and pregnant people will be incarcerated for accessing a basic human right and controlling their own bodies.

This meeting notes there is massive anger and resistance across the US to this attack. Demonstrations have been called in US on Saturday 9 July and Abortion Rights UK has called a solidarity march from Trafalgar Square to the US Embassy at 4 pm on the same day.

This meeting resolves to:

·  Support the 9 July demonstration and future solidarity action to defend abortion rights.

·  To affiliate to Abortion Rights

·  To circulate information from Abortion Rights to members

·  To make a donation to Abortion Rights to support its work
