Tory landslide poses a fresh threat to the right to choose in the UK

Pro-choice campaigners are warning that abortion rights could be under threat under the new Conservative government. The Conservatives were the only major party not to commit to the decriminalisation of abortion in their manifesto, with Prime Minister, Boris Johnson having stayed conspicuously quiet on the matter throughout his entire career. Johnson has routinely abstained from any votes on abortion, but had previously assembled a cabinet of anti-choice MPs including Nadine Dorries.

Kerry Abel, chair of Abortion Rights said of the new Government; “We need to hear more from this government about how they will support abortion rights, both inside Parliament, in their negotiations over Brexit, in health, and education.”

“There’s no doubt, if we don’t see a significant step change, our reproductive rights are under threat. But our activists will re-double our efforts and you will see more of our campaign.”

There were notable successes for vocal pro-choice MPs, with Stella Creasy, Diana Johnson and Rupa Huq retaining their seats.
