Press Release: Rebutting BBC Misinformation on Abortion Pill Safety, Official Response to Recent Claims

In response to recent claims made on BBC Sunday Morning Live regarding the alleged hospitalisation of 10,000 individuals after abortion pill usage, Abortion Rights wishes to swiftly address the misinformation and clarify the facts.

The insinuation that the medication utilised in abortion procedures is unsafe is unequivocally false. Dr. Sonia Adesara, an executive member of Abortion Rights, emphasises, “The medication used to terminate a pregnancy is very safe. It is safer than ibuprofen or viagra. Serious problems related to the medicine are extremely rare.” as highlighted by Manna Mostaghim, Executive member of Abortion Rights, in her latest blog,  Only a small percentage of individuals, approximately 10%, may experience common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, or fever/chills. Moreover, serious complications like heavy bleeding or infection occur in just 0.2% of cases.

Kerry Abel, Chair of Abortion Rights, reinforces the organisation’s stance, stating, “Medical or surgical abortions are very safe procedures and are significantly safer than childbirth, if the BBC are going to cover these kinds of issues they should have the facts available and not allow misleading information from fringe anti-choice groups. 

“Only 6% of the British public are anti-choice, so representing two speakers in equal weight is also disproportionate.

“It is crucial to clarify that the term “hospital treatment” may be misleading, as it encompasses a spectrum of care, including routine follow-up appointments or consultations, not solely emergency situations.”
