ABORTION RIGHTS STANDS WITH NICOLA: ABORTION IS HEALTHCARE, NOT A CRIME

Abortion Rights stands in full solidarity with Nicola, a woman who was cruelly dragged through the courts simply for making decisions about her own body.

Her name — which should never have been made public — became a symbol of how deeply unjust and harmful the current laws remain. This case should never have been tried.

Nicola faced this ordeal during the COVID-19 pandemic, when accessing healthcare was harder and more dangerous than ever. Forced into isolation and uncertainty, she needed compassion and care — not criminal charges.

Abortion is not a crime. It is healthcare — and Nicola deserved support, not prosecution.

Kerry Abel, Chair of Abortion Rights, said:

“Abortion is healthcare and a fundamental human right — we will continue to stand up against any threat to that right, ensuring that everyone has access to safe and legal abortion without shame or stigma. Nicola’s case makes it clear: we must decriminalise abortion so that no one ever again faces the cruelty of prosecution for making decisions about their own body.”

Nicola’s story is a stark reminder of what happens when outdated abortion laws are used to punish rather than protect. No one should face prison, public exposure or shame for accessing reproductive care.

This cannot happen again. We stand with Nicola. We demand change. It is time to decriminalise abortion — now.
