Abortion Rights Condems Creation of Reform UK Christian Fellowship as Political Vehicle for Christian Nationalism and Anti-Abortion Agenda

Abortion Rights today expressed concern and strong opposition to the announcement of the Reform UK Christian Fellowship, describing it as a troubling attempt to merge religion with far right politics. The national pro-choice campaign warned that the new group would pursue a nationalist, anti-abortion agenda,  threatening fundamental rights and freedoms.

The launch of the Reform UK Christian Fellowship is not about faith or spiritual community. It represents a deliberate strategy to use Christianity as a political tool—mobilising religious identity to justify restrictions on reproductive healthcare, undermine bodily autonomy and  exclude those who do not conform to a narrow ideological worldview.

Kerry Abel, Chair of Abortion Rights, said:

“This is a clear example of Christian nationalism seeping into party politics. When religious ideology is used to influence lawmaking, women and pregnant people pay the price. We will not allow faith to be weaponised to strip away reproductive freedom.”

By explicitly linking party politics, religious institutions and voters, the “Fellowship” blurs the line between church and state and risks marginalising millions of people who do not share these beliefs, including people of faith who strongly support abortion access and reproductive justice.

Abortion Rights  warn that this agenda will further stigmatise those who seek or provide abortions, and reframe essential healthcare as a moral or religious issue rather than a matter of human rights and public health.

“No political party has the right to impose one religious worldview on a diverse and plural society,” Abel added. “Reproductive healthcare must be guided by evidence, compassion, and respect for personal autonomy—not by ideology.”

Abortion Rights reaffirms its commitment to defending the right to choose, protecting access to safe and legal abortion, and challenging all attempts to undermine bodily autonomy and equality.
